Super Savings Saturday – 8/22/09

Posted by Admin on Aug 22nd, 2009

Somehow in the last few weeks, grocery shopping has become either an all-day event or a two-day marathon.  I’m not sure how that happened and I can’t say I like it.  We’ve been splitting it up and doing 2-3 stores at a time, instead of just powering through and getting it all done at once.  I think next week, we’re just going to have to get up early, pack lots of snacks and drinks and get it done in one shot.

Anyway, even though we shopped all day, we still came in well under budget.

On Sunday, I got my newspapers at Dillon’s as usual.  This was the only shopping I did at Dillon’s this week, since I felt the deals were a little sparse.

  • 4 newspapers
    1.86 x 4 = 7.99 with tax

On Tuesday, we went to CVS and spent $2.02.  We saved $12.96.  You can see all details of my trip here.

Then we went to Hy-Vee, mainly for the produce sales.

  • Braeburn Apples
    0.97/lb x 2.84 lbs = 2.75
  • Green Beans
    0.99/lb x 1.71 lbs = 1.69
  • HyVee Garden Salad Mix
    0.77 (with in-ad coupon)
  • 2 HyVee Yellow Cake Mixes
    0.94 x 2 = 1.88
  • Roberts Cottage Cheese
    1.28
  • 2 HyVee Shredded Cheeses
    1.25 x 2 = 2.50

Total w/ tax: $11.69; Total estimated savings: $5.00 (HyVee doesn’t calculate savings on their receipts)

At Aldi, I spent $35.73.  The broccoli was a particularly good deal.  It is normally priced at $1.39/pack and it was only $0.99, which is why I got two.

At Walmart, I only used two coupons.  The first was a Buy One Ritz Crackers, Get One Wheat Thins Free.  So that one saved me $2.98.  The other was a free candy bar coupon, and that saved me $0.64.

Walmart Total w/ tax: $21.64; Total Savings: $3.62

Also at Walmart, I cashed some WIC checks and got the following items for free (not pictured and not counted in any totals):

  • 1 lb baby carrots
  • 4 cans of juice concentrate
  • 3.5 gallons of milk
  • 1 can of tuna
  • 1 jar peanut butter
  • 1 lb dried beans

For the whole shopping trip, we spent $79.06 and saved $21.58…that’s a savings of 27%!!!!
