Grocery Shopping Week of 2/1

Posted by Admin on Feb 4th, 2009

This week we ended up going over budget, mainly because I bought some things for the kitchen that I’d been considering for awhile.  But since they’re one-time investments, it was worth it to me.

At Dillon’s, I was thrilled to find out that they had continued their mega-sale for another week and even added new items.  It was especially nice because some new coupons for participating items came out in the 1/25 papers and I hadn’t used them yet.

I think I can make sense of the receipt this time.  The cashier did miss one coupon for the French’s mustard and I thought he did while we were there, but didn’t say anything.  I really should have, but at least it’s not as bad as last week!  For anyone who is new to this, Dillon’s doubles coupons up to a dollar, which is really nice!

We got:

  • 1 box Nature Valley granola bars 2.59 – 1 (.60/1 doubled to 1) = 1.59
  • 4 Fiber One granola bars 2.59 x 4 = 10.36 – 4 (four .50/1 doubled) = 6.36
  • 4 Orville Redenbacher Naturals popcorns 2.19 x 4 = 8.76 – 3.20 (four .40/1 doubled to .80/1) = 5.56
  • 2 French’s Mustards 3.15 x 2 = 6.30 – 1 (.75/1 doubled to 1) = 5.30 (should have been 4.30 if the cashier hadn’t lost my .50/1 Q)
  • 1 Cattleman’s BBQ Sauce 1.69 – 1 (.75/1 doubled to 1) = .69
  • 4 Kleenex’s 1.50 x 4 = 6 – 3.20 (four .40/1 doubled to .80/1) = 2.80
  • 1 Chex Mix 2.19 – .60 Shortcuts Q = 1.59 – 1 (.50/1 doubled) = .59
  • 3 Chex Mix 2.19 x 3 = 6.57 – 3 (three .50/1 doubled) = 3.57

That’s 20 items, so with the Mega Sale (get $5 off each order of 10 participating items), I got $10 off.

Total: $19.17 with tax and I saved $39.38.

I also bought 3 newspapers at Dillon’s in a separate transaction.  It would have been 4, but the only other papers left were missing their inserts. Be sure you check your papers before you buy them!  Anyway, that added up to $6 exactly.

I didn’t have as much luck at CVS as I was hoping.  I was hoping to get the Loreal Revitalift Cleanser and the Gillette Shampoo so that I could roll my ECB’s.  They were out of both, and my ECB’s don’t expire until the end of the month, so I just bought the other things on my list and paid cash.

  • 4 boxes of Electrasol Powertabs 2.99 x 4 = 11.96 – 10 (four $2.50/1) = 1.96
  • 2 Progresso soups B1G1 3.19 x 2 = 6.38 – 3.19 = 3.19 – 2.20 (two 1.10/1) = 0.99

Total w/o tax was 2.95.  The total with tax was 4.08 with a savings of 26.99.

It was so nice being able to shop for things we’d use at Walgreens without worrying about rolling Register Rewards!

  • 2 Comets .50 x 2 = 1.00
  • 2 Theraflu Warming Liquids 5.00 x 2 = 10.00 – 4 (two $2/1) = 6.00 (and I’ll get a $6 rebate, making this free!)
  • 4 Pop Tarts 1.50 x 4 = 6.00 – 2 (two $1/2) = 4.00

Total with tax was $12.27 off my gift card.  Savings was $14.36.

In the future, I can write up a rundown of my Aldi trips, but since they don’t accept coupons, I won’t do it unless someone would like me to.

I spent $28.88.  And am really kicking myself for not checking my receipt earlier.  They had a display of coffee for $1.99 so I bought two bags since it was quite a bit cheaper than what I normally buy.  Just checked my receipt and they charged me $3.99 for each.  Not happy.  Not happy at all!

We ended up going to a different Walmart than normal, so they didn’t have some of the baby snacks I had coupons for and I had to improvise.  So we didn’t save as much as I would have liked.  Also, you can see the organizational/kitchen items we bought.  I can also do a rundown for this in the future, but I’m really tired.  It’s almost 12:30 am and I have to go to bed.  But I had two $1/1 coupons for the Beech Nut snacks, a $1/2 coupon for the Fruit Twists, a $1/1 coupon for the Buddy Bar (making it free) and two $1/4 coupons for the yogurts.

We spent $56.61 and saved $6. Keep in mind that $34.03 of that total is the kitchen and organizing items.

So the grand total spending is $114.74 and the grand total savings was $86.73. Like I said, over budget, but if I hadn’t bought those kitchen things, we would have been under.  I think it will all balance out next week, though.
